DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jörg Weber\nAbstract\nThe study of water waves is a class
ical problem at the interface of mathematics and physics. In\nthis talk\,
I will consider two-dimensional travelling waves governed by the full Eule
r equations\nand driven solely by gravity. I will present two recent resul
ts. First\, using global bifurcation\ntheory\, we construct periodic trave
lling waves with arbitrary vorticity. These waves may exhibit\ncritical la
yers and overhanging profiles\, illustrating the rich range of phenomena p
ermitted in the\nwater wave problem. Second\, for irrotational solitary wa
ves\, we establish a new and sharper\nupper bound for the Froude number (a
non-dimensional wave speed). The talk is based on joint\nwork with Evgeni
 y Lokharu and Erik Wahlén.
