DESCRIPTION: Jeroen Kodde (FLEXLAB\, EPFL)\nAbstract: The buckling of sp
herical shells is heavily dependent on geometrical defects. A slight pertu
rbation in the geometry lowers the load that a structure can hold consider
ably. This is important knowledge for safely constructing buildings. Howev
er\, current defect sensitivity is only understood under loading under ext
ernal pressure\, not under gravity. In my last 6 months I investigated thi
s previously experimentally unattainable loading for shell buckling. Is th
e behavior the same as external pressure or do we need to rewrite the theo
ries?\n \nBiography: Jeroen Kodde is a master student in Fluids\, Bio an
d Soft Matter at the Eindhoven University of Technology\, where he focusse
s on statistical physics of soft matter systems. Currently\, he does an in
ternship in the fleXLab under the supervision of Pedro Reis and Uba Ubaman
ya on shell buckling under body forces.
