 e build on recent research on category contrast to gain new insights on th
 e impact of technological innovations. Extant research in the innovation l
 iterature has illustrated the role of individual properties of innovations
  and contextual conditions in explaining variations of impact. The spillov
 ers obtained from innovations by belonging to socially visible and coheren
 t technology domains have been less investigated so far. Analyzing forward
  citation patterns of more than two millions patents\, we qualify extant r
 esearch in three ways: first\, we show that a technological domain's contr
 ast increases the average impact of the innovations belonging to it\; seco
 nd\, the beneficial effect of contrast stems from an increased social visi
 bility of innovations\, net of variations in quality\; third\, this trend 
 of results is particularly strong among younger innovations. The paper fur
 ther elaborates on the theoretical link between the sociological literatur
 e on categories and innovation research.
