DESCRIPTION:José del R. Millán\nDefitech Foundation Chair in Non-invasiv
 e Brain-machine Interface CNBI\, EPFL\, Lausanne\, Switzerland\nIn the fra
mework of the European project TOBI\, we have developed a variety of BMI p
rototypes that have been extensively tested by motor-impaired users with a
fter a short training period. a substantial number of tests have been carr
ied out at end users’ home and clinics\, outside well controlled laborat
ory conditions. Equally significantly\, non-BMI experts (assistive technol
ogy professionals and therapists) have run many of these tests independent
ly or with a minimum of remote assistance from researchers.\nIn this talk
I will summarize this work and the main lessons learned from this major ef
fort\, highlighting new principles incorporated in the brain-controlled de
 vices.
