 ecturer in Engineering Science).\nPhase contrast techniques in the convent
 ional optical microscope are partially coherent in nature. A few of these 
 methods\, in particular differential interference contrast\, and different
 ial phase contrast\, are introduced\, and their optical properties compare
 d. Partially coherent imaging can be simulated based on a phase space mode
 l. The Wigner function of the object transmission can be regarded as a mea
 sure of local phase gradient\, analogous to an instantaneous frequency\, t
 hus justifying the physical basis of the Wigner approach.
