DESCRIPTION:Michael J. Graf\, Professor of Physics\, Boston College and Vi
siting Professor\, LQM-EPFL\nThe pyrochlore iridate family of materials (A
2Ir2O7\, A = lanthanide or yttrium) is characterized by the presence of co
mparable Coulomb and spin orbit interactions\, where the relative strength
can be tuned through the choice of A. Additionally\, magnetic frustration
effects associated with the pyrochlore lattice are present.  I will disc
uss our recent work on the magnetic properties of three representative mem
 bers of this family (A = Yb\, Y\, and Nd) via muSR\, magnetization\, and t
ransport measurements as the system crosses over from long-range magnetica
lly ordered insulators toward a non-ordered conducting ground state.
