 Abstract:\nThe question of “what is in our water” is relevant in many 
 ways: from people concerned about their drinking water\, to scientists ass
 essing contamination and the effectiveness of treatment techniques through
  to the health of aquatic systems in general. Despite the different foci \
 , there is some common ground: using mass spectrometry to detect and ident
 ify “known” and “unknown” organic contaminants in water. However\,
  even capturing the “knowns” is not a trivial task\, as complex transf
 ormation processes can occur in the environment. The evolution of high res
 olution\, high accuracy mass spectrometric techniques has opened up a worl
 d of opportunities for environmental analytical chemists\, but with it com
 es an almost unconquerable amount of data. This talk showcases some recent
  developments aimed at tackling these challenges\, from comprehensive extr
 action and target analysis through to computational non-target identificat
 ion and the exchange of knowledge within and between disciplines for the b
 enefit of science.Dr Emma Schymanski completing a double-degree in Chemist
 ry and Environmental Engineering (both with honours) at the University of 
 Western Australia in 2003\, before working for 3 years as a Consulting Env
 ironmental Engineer with Golder Associates in Perth. Her PhD work at the H
 elmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig\, Germany focussed o
 n Integrated Analytical and Computer Tools for Toxicant Identification in 
 Effect-Directed Analysis and was completed in 2011\, before moving to Eawa
 g (Swiss Federal Institute for Aquatic Science and Technology) later that 
 year as a Postdoc. She is currently on a Marie Curie Intra-European Postdo
 ctoral Fellowship in the Environmental Chemistry Department developing met
 hods for contaminant identification.
