DESCRIPTION:Prof. Yeukuang HWU\, Institute of Physics\, Academia Sinica\,
Taiwan\nBenefitted from the fast developments in nanotechnology\, X-ray im
aging has made great progress in the past few years. The spatial resolutio
n and contrast notably increased by use of Fresnel based focusing optics a
nd the refractive-index imaging\, opening up entirely new domains of appli
cation\, specifically in biomedical research. This evolution is the result
of a painstaking optimization of many different aspects rather than of a
single technical breakthrough. Successful application in neuron imaging an
d microvascular profiling will be discussed as examples of the recent achi
evements in optics and in staining techniques that enable full field hard-
x-ray microscopy to produce images of quality comparable to electron and v
 isible microscopies.
