DESCRIPTION:Ivone Benfatto\, ITER Organization - Electrical Engineering Di
 vision\, Cadarache - France\nITER is a large-scale scientific experiment t
o demonstrate the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion energ
y using Magnetic Field Confinement Technology and thus bridge the gap betw
een the present Tokamak experiments and a first demonstration of a fusion
power plant.\nIt is presently under construction at St. Paul lez Durance i
n southern France and it is one of the largest and most ambitious internat
ional science projects ever conducted.\nITER\, which means "the way" in La
tin\, will require unparalleled levels of international collaboration amon
 g its seven members: China\, Europe\, India\, Japan\, Korea\, Russia and U
nited States. This is particularly relevant to the fact that a significant
majority of the plant components will be provided to the ITER Organizatio
n by in-kind contributions from the seven members.\nThe ITER power supply
systems can be subdivided into two main groups\, the:\n1. electrical distr
ibution of the steady state power (about 120 MW) and the pulsed power (500
MW peak power demand)\;\n2. pulsed power supplies which include the syste
ms to initiate\, control and heat the plasma (Coil Power and Plasma Heatin
g & Current Drive Power supplies)\, and the systems to protect the superco
nductive magnets.\nThis presentation\, after a brief description of the IT
ER project and its international organization\, describes the main design
parameters\, the design solutions and the status of the design and constru
ction activities related to the ITER electrical power distribution and the
coil power supplies.\nFinally\, a brief description of the current on sit
e civil construction activities will also be presented.
