DESCRIPTION:Prof. Bing Li\nThe vulnerability of conventional non-seismical
 ly detailed reinforced concrete building structures due to loss of columns
  has been emphasized during the past years. The lack of corresponding expe
 rimental tests has led to gap in the knowledge for the design of reinforce
 d concrete structures to mitigate the potential of progressive collapse du
 e to loss of ground storey column by extreme loading. This talk provides a
 n overview of assessing the Collapse Risk of Singapore's Existing Reinforc
 ed Concrete Frame Structures. These investigations attempt to gain underst
 anding on the behavior of reinforced concrete substructures when subjected
  to the loss one of its ground column scenarios in order to improve the st
 ate of the art of protective design. The results of this study can be used
  to form a basis for the understanding of the behavior of RC structures fo
 r progressive collapse.\nBio: Dr Bing Li is an Associate Professor and Dir
 ector\, Natural Hazards Research Centre (NHRC) at Nanyang Technological Un
 iversity (NTU)\, Singapore. He received his Ph.D in Civil Engineering from
  the University of Canterbury\, New Zealand and has extensive experience i
 n design practice with top ranked international consulting firms for six y
 ears in Hong Kong before joining NTU in 1999. His research interests are i
 n reinforced concrete and precast concrete structures\, particularly in de
 sign for earthquake and blast resistance.
