DESCRIPTION:Prof. Philippe Gillet\, Laboratoire de sciences de la Terre et
des planètes\, ICMP-EPFL\nIn the newly created Earth and Planetary Scien
ce Laboratory at EPFL we investigate phase equilibria and physical propert
ies of materials submitted to ultra high-pressure (up to 200 GPa) and temp
erature (up to 4 000 K) using the laser-heated diamond anvil cell (LHDAC).
These conditions are typical of deep planetary interiors (more than 3000
km depth). These experiments are central for understanding the processes t
hat have shaped terrestrial planets and governed their evolution.\nWe also
work on meteorites\, unique fragments of Mars or missing planets. These u
nique samples provide insights on the shock events that have continuously
punctuated the evolution of the Solar System. Diamonds are witnesses of sh
ocks in rocks. We will show how they form on Earth and Mars  using simple
observations\, first order calculations  as well as molecular dynamics s
 imulations.
