DESCRIPTION:Prof. Jacob Gavan\, SCE - Shamoon College of Engineering\, Isr
ael\nBio: Jacob Gavan earned the B.Sc. degree in the Technion Haifa 1961\,
the  MEE in Eindhoven Technological University the Nederland\, both\, wi
th distinction\, in 1969 using a scholarship of  Philips Ind. and  his P
h.D. degree in radio communication in 1979 in ENSERG  Grenoble (France) w
ith congratulations of the Jury. He worked as an ITU Expert from 1963 to 1
967 & 1971 to 1974\, and held positions in the radio communication industr
y in Israel. He was also an Adjunct Associate Professor in Microwaves and
Communication Systems at the  Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.\nJacob
Gavan was elected as IEEE fellow in 1995 and founded a department of Commu
nication Engineering at the Holon Academic Institute of Technology (HAIT\,
Israel). He was selected to Dean of the HAIT new school of Electrical\, E
lectronic and Communication Engineering as Full Professor from December 20
01 and elected as Dean from 1/10/03 for a two years period. Prof. Jacob Ga
van leaded the establishment of a M.Sc program in Electronic and Communica
tion Engineering which was approved by the council  of higher education i
n Israel and include around 130 students most of them in Communication Eng
ineering.\nHe was Consultant in radio communications systems especially on
Radio mutual Interference and Radiation effects and RF up to millimeter w
aves circuitry and systems  to several large Israeli and international co
mpanies. He has published over 150 papers on theoretical and applied radio
and Satellite communications\, electromagnetics\, and Radar Systems espec
ially on Radio mutual Interference and Radiation effects. All shown in www
.hait.ac.il staff\, "Jacob Gavan" CV and publications or in Google search
tool for Jacob (Jacques) Gavan.\nProfessor Jacob Gavan is active in the Un
ion Radio Science International URSI Commission E and Chairman of E8 worki
ng group on "Interference in Radio Systems above 30 MHz" and in General As
sembly Session E/C/F "Interference in radio communication". He earned the
best paper award from the IEEE International Symposium on EMC.\, Santa Cla
ra\, September 1982 and was associated editor of the Transactions on EMC f
or several years. Recently Professor Jacob Gavan was elected as distinguis
hed lecturer by the IEEE Communication society and as chairman of the stud
ent activities by IEEE Israel. His biography is listed in the Internationa
l Directory of Distinguished Leadership.\nA short introduction will descri
be: The tremendous developments in satellites from the first Sputnik in 19
 57 to the mega-satellite Sky-Terra in 2010\, their numbers\, main orbits a
nd the importance of the radio communication subsystems.  An extreme mini
aturization as predicted by Moore's law enables the design and realization
of high quality small satellites. The classification\, advantages and dis
advantages of micro\, nano\, pico and even femto satellites will be discus
sed as well as their main applications .Will be described the pioneering d
evelopments of the radio amateurs OSCAR satellites and ground stations\, f
ollowed now by the design and development of hundreds low cost small satel
lites by students all over the world. This enhanced significantly the quan
tity and quality of the engineers and scientists in the aerospace and radi
o communication fields. In addition will be discussed advanced small satel
lites selected projects especially for the NASA and special missions\, as
well as main activities in the USA\, Europe\, and all over the world inclu
ding Israel.\nThe seminar will conclude by forecasting the future of small
satellites and an extended bibliographic list will be\nprovided.
