DESCRIPTION:Michael Thaddeus\, Columbia University\, visiting EPFL\nWe wil
l examine two compactifications of reductive groups with\nvery attractive
properties\, namely the wonderful compactification of\nPGL(n\,C) and the K
ausz compactification of GL(n\,C).  We will explore their\nconnections to
each other and to moduli problems in several corners of\nmathematics: spa
ces of broken flows in Morse theory\, spaces of stable maps\nto Grassmanni
ans\, and spaces of coherent sheaves on singular Riemann\nsurfaces.  Then
we will see how parts of this circle of ideas have been\ngeneralized\, in
joint work with Johan Martens\, to arbitrary reductive\ngroups.
