DESCRIPTION:Markus Niederberger\, ETHZ\nBio: 2012 – present\nAssociate P
rofessor\, Head of the Laboratory for Multifunctional Materials\, Departme
 nt of Materials\, ETH Zurich\n2007 – 2011\nAssistant Professor (tenure-t
rack)\, Head of the Laboratory for Multifunctional Materials\, Depart ment
of Materials\, ETH Zurich\n2002 – 2006\nGroup leader with Prof. Markus
Antonietti\, Colloid Department\, Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Int
 erfaces\, Potsdam\, Germany\nSubject: Encoded self-organization of nanopar
 ticles via polymer modification\n2001 – 2002\nPostdoctoral fellow with P
rof. Galen D. Stucky\, University of California\nSanta Barbara\, Santa Bar
 bara\, USA\nSubject:\nBioinspired synthesis of optical materials\nThe talk
will give an overview of nonaqueous synthesis routes to different types o
f inorganic materials .  It will be shown how the use of microwave irradi
ation greatly accelerates these processes\, offering an efficient tool to
prepare powders\, nanoparticulate films and doped materials within just a
few minutes.  The particles can be used as building blocks for preparing
multicomponent aerogels and metal foams.  Potential applications of these
materials lie in the field of lithium ion batteries\, gas sensors\, photo
 catalysts and transparent conducting oxides.
