DESCRIPTION:Prof. Matthew G. Karlaftis\nIn the field of transportation\, d
ata analysis is probably the most important and widely used research tool
available. In the data analysis universe\, there are two 'schools of thoug
ht'\; the first uses statistics as the tool of choice\, while the second -
one of the many methods from - Computational Intelligence. Although the g
oal of both approaches is the same\, the two have kept each other at arm's
length. Researchers frequently fail to communicate and even understand ea
ch other's work. In this presentation we discuss differences and similarit
ies between these two approaches\, attempt to provide a set of insights fo
r selecting the appropriate approach\, and present three cases studies fro
m transportation research that compare the two distinct approaches on the
same set of data.\nBio: Matthew G. Karlaftis\, Ph.D. is an Associate Profe
ssor at the National Technical University of Athens. He holds BSc and MSc
degrees in Civil Engineering and an MSc in Mathematics from the University
of Miami (USA)\, and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Purdue University.
Prof. Karlaftis has long and significant research experience on a variety
of research areas related to transportation planning\, transit operations
\, transportation economics and quantitative methods. Prof. Karlaftis has
participated in many national and European research projects and is the co
-author of an international best selling book on transportation statistics
and econometrics\, book chapters\, peer reviewed journal papers and paper
s in conference proceedings. He is Editor-in-Chief for Transportation Rese
arch part C\, European Editor of ASCE’s Journal of Transportation Engine
ering\, Associate Editor of ASCE’s Journal of Infrastructure Systems\, a
nd an editorial board member for eight other journals. He has received the
Fulbright Scholar Grant (2006-2007)\, the Walter L. Huber Civil Engineeri
ng Innovative Research Prize (2005\, by the American Society of Civil Engi
neers)\, the ABJ80 Best Paper Award for 2009 by TRB\, and the 2011 ASCE St
 ate-of-the-art Award.
