DESCRIPTION:Alexander Gorodnick\nWe start these lectures by introducing a
remarkable convolution inequality for semisimple groups discovered by Kunz
e and Stein. This inequality allows to prove a quantitative ergodic theore
m for actions of semisimple groups\, and in the second part of the lecture
s we discuss some number-theoretic applications of this ergodic theorem. T
his includes counting lattice points\, Diophantine approximation\, and sie
ving for almost-primes/square-free points on varieties.
