DESCRIPTION:Donna Testerman [EPFL]\nWe report on recent work with A. Zales
 ski concerning the study of reductive overgroups of regular elements in re
 ductive algebraic groups.\nIn the case where the regular element is a regu
 lar unipotent element\, this work complements the work of Saxl and Seitz\,
  where they classified the maximal positive-dimensional closed\nsubgroups 
 H of a simple algebraic group G\, such that H contains a regular unipotent
  element of G.\nOur main result on unipotent elements shows that a connect
 ed reductive subgroup H containing a regular unipotent element of G does n
 ot lie in a proper parabolic subgroup of G.\nWe describe the application o
 f the above result to the study of overgroups of regular unipotent element
 s. Then we will discuss our current work on overgroups of general regular 
 elements\nin simple algebraic groups.
