DESCRIPTION:Dr. William J. O’Brien\nAbstract\nAs part of a larger moveme
nt to ubiquitous computing where sensors and \nmobile computers are everyw
here\, the intelligent jobsite is becoming a \nreality. Applications such
as structural health monitoring and materials \nmanagement that use sensor
s and mobile computing devices are being \ndeveloped and deployed commerci
ally. There are also specific sensors and \napplications for construction
safety\, such as location monitoring. \nHowever\, these applications are p
urpose driven and are not deployed for \nreuse. Yet the intelligent job s
ite will have a plethora of sensed \ninformation. This creates an opportu
nity for workers to access data in \nan ad hoc manner as they move through
  a site\, leveraging data for \nmultiple purposes. However\, re-tasking an
d reuse of sensors in a dynamic \nsetting presents significant challenges
including ad hoc identification \nof sensors in a local environment\, gene
ralization of data\, and the use \nof dynamic information for decision sup
port. This talk describes these \nchallenges in the context of constructio
n safety. Particular focus is \ngiven to the decision support challenges.
Research objectives include \ndefining safety in a monitored environment\
, deploying decision rules in \na distributed environment first assuming p
 erfect information\, and\, \nfinally\, distributed decision support with i
mperfect information. The \nchallenges of imperfect data parallel some of
those faced by researchers \nin structural health monitoring including mod
el based interpretation of \nuncertain data and system identification. We
draw parallels where \nappropriate and look for open discussion.\n\nAbout
the Speaker:\nDr. William J. O’Brien focuses his professional efforts on
improving \ncollaboration and coordination among firms in the design and
\nconstruction industry. Dr. O’Brien is an expert on construction supply
\nchain management and electronic collaboration\, where he conducts \nres
earch\, teaches and consults on both systems design and implementation \ni
ssues. He was the lead editor on the recently published Construction \nSup
ply Chain Management Handbook (CRC Press). Dr. O’Brien is currently \nan
Associate Professor in the Department of Civil\, Architectural\, and \nEn
vironmental Engineering in the Cockrell School of Engineering at the \nUni
 versity of Texas at Austin.
