DESCRIPTION:Dr. Johan Chang\, Laboratory for Neutron and Synchrotron Spect
roscopy\, PSI & EPFL\nThe mechanism of high temperature superconductivity
and the so-called pseudogap phase in the cuprate materials has yet to be s
ettled. This talk will focus on the mysterius pseudogap problem\; is it a
precursor to superconductivity or a competing phase? The Nernst effect bei
ng extremely sensitive to both electronic transformations and superconduct
ing fluctuations is therefore a powerfull and important technique in the s
tudy of the pseudogap phase. We will present new Nernst effect data on und
erdoped cuprates and discuss the nature of the superconducting flucutuatio
ns in the cuprates. Are these predominately phase or amplitude fluctuation
s and what is the relation to the pseudogap phase? These are questions tha
 t will be addressed.
