DESCRIPTION:Emmanuel Breuillard\nThe study of approximate groups\, that is
finite subsets of a group that are ''almost closed'' under multiplication
\, and their rough classification has developed rapidly in the past few ye
ars mostly driven by applications to expander graphs in computer science a
nd sieve theory in arithmetic. A shift in perspective occurred a couple of
years ago when this mostly combinatorial question was recast in the frame
work of model theory by E. Hrushovski who obtained\, among other things\,
a classification of approximate subgroups of GL_n. In the talk I will pres
ent these developments and their subsequent quantitative refinements. \nBa
sed on a joint work with Ben Green and Terence Tao.
