DESCRIPTION:Arvind - Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laborato
ry\, Massachusetts Institute of Technology\nAbstract:\nThere is unpreceden
ted need for special-purpose hardware – driven primarily by power constr
aints of mobile devices. Special purpose hardware can save two to three or
ders of magnitude in power over pure software solutions\, and unlike the o
ld days the hardware-software interface is now a constantly moving boundar
 y.  The risks of designing such HW-SW systems can be mitigated substantia
lly if one can build a fast\, accurate and flexible prototype of the syste
m quickly.  For this architectural renaissance we need a new constructive
design methodology which requires (1) Reusing complex blocks designed by
domain expertise\; (2) Experimenting with designs to achieve goals such as
  cost\, performance\, and power\; and (3) Conducting high-fidelity full sy
stem simulation\, including software.  We will illustrate such a  method
ology using some of our recent projects\, which include AirBlue (a wireles
 s baseband processing system)\, H.264\, Sparse FFT\, BlueDBM (a 16-node ma
chines with programmable Flash controllers)\, and Arete (a FPGA-based cycl
 e-accurate High-performance Mulicore Simulator).Biography:\nArvind is the
Johnson Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at MIT. Arvind’s g
roup\, in collaboration with Motorola\, built the Monsoon dataflow machine
s and its associated software in the late eighties. In 2000\, Arvind start
ed Sandburst which was sold to Broadcom in 2006. In 2003\, Arvind co-found
ed Bluespec Inc.\, an EDA company to produce a set of tools for high-level
synthesis. In 2001\, Dr. R. S. Nikhil and Arvind published the book "Impl
icit parallel programming in pH". Arvind's current research focus is on en
abling rapid development of embedded systems.\nArvind is a Fellow of IEEE
and ACM\, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the Amer
ican Academy of Arts and Sciences.
