 , University of Konstanz\, Germany\nGlucocorticoids are potent endogenous 
 and therapeutically administered steroids with widespread activities in me
 tabolism and immune regulation. Though produced at large quantities in the
  adrenal glands\, there is increasing evidence for an important role of ex
 tra-adrenal sources of glucocorticoids in regulating tissue-specific proce
 sses. We have recently shown that the intestinal crypt cells synthesize an
 d release glucocorticoids in response to immune cell stimulation and that 
 intestinal glucocorticoids have a critical role in the maintenance of inte
 stinal immune homeostasis. In this presentation our studies on the regulat
 ion of glucocorticoid synthesis in the intestinal epithelium by cytokines 
 and nuclear receptors\, and its consequences for the regulation of inflamm
 atory diseases of the intestinal mucosa will be discussed.
