DESCRIPTION:Dr Paul Seidler - Coordinator for the Nanotechnology Center at
IBM Research GmbH\nThe information technology industry owes its success i
n large part to the ability of scientists and engineers to make the physic
al manifestation of information\, the devices and “bits”\, ever smalle
 r.  We are approaching some real physical limits\, though\, and further m
iniaturization of conventional transistors will no longer be possible.  N
ew device concepts\, some quite radical\, are emerging.  Performance gain
s are also being achieved by means other than improvement of the logical s
witching elements\, for example in system architecture and in data transmi
ssion\, where miniaturization and integration is occurring at an even grea
ter pace.  While we have developed tools to manipulate and characterize m
aterials down to atomic dimensions\, economical manufacturing at the nanom
eter scale still represents a significant challenge.  Here too new approa
ches are being sought.  In this talk\, some examples of the further evolu
tion of information technology hardware will be discussed as well the revo
lutionary changes to be addressed in the future.
