DESCRIPTION:Prof. Jinwoo Cheon\nBio: Jinwoo Cheon graduated from Yonsei Un
iversity with B.S. and earned his Ph.D. from University of Illinois\, Urba
na-Champaign in 1993. After post-doctoral training studying inorganic mate
rials chemistry at U.C. Berkeley and UCLA\, he joined the faculty of Korea
Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). In 2002\, he moved
to Yonsei University.\nJinwoo Cheon is a senior editor of Accounts of Chem
ical Research (American Chemical Society)\, and an editorial board member
of Nano Letters (American Chemical Society). He is a fellow of Royal Socie
ty of Chemistry and a member of the Korean Academy of Science and Technolo
gy.\nHe has been merited with numerous awards including Inchon Prize (2010
)\, Knowledge Creation Award (2010)\, Korean Top 10 Next Leaders in Scienc
 e (Sisa Press\, 2008)\, Song-gok Science Award (2007)\, Yonsei Research Ac
hievement Award (2006)\, the Korean Chemical Society Award in Inorganic Ch
emistry (2004)\, the National Science Prize for Junior Faculty (2002: pres
ented by the President of Korea)\, and the Wiley Young Chemist Award (2001
).\nOne of the important trends of next-generation nanomedicine is therano
stics that is defined by the combination of therapeutics and diagnostics o
n a single platform. Magnetic nanoparticles are among one of the most esse
ntial platforms for targeted imaging\, therapy\, and simultaneous monitori
ng of therapeutic efficacy. In this talk\, I will discuss magnetic nanopar
ticles as a core platform material for theranostics and add a variety of f
unctionalities such as drug\, targeting moiety\, and gene to enhance their
performance. Their unique utilization in highly accurate dual-modal MR im
aging\, therapeutic hyperthermia of cancer cells\, controlled drug release
\, gene delivery\, and molecular level cell signaling and cell fate contro
 l will be discussed.
