DESCRIPTION:Niels Birbaumer\nThe mind\, where our thoughts arise and our e
motions are perceived is powered by the brain’s metabolism and intricate
electrical activity. Today’s imaging technologies\, including functiona
l magnetic resonance imaging\, electroencephalography and magnetoencephalo
graphy allow us to map where these mental activities reside and provide a
measure of them in real time. Are we approaching ‘mind reading’ and un
derstanding some of the secrets of the body’s most mysterious organ?\nPr
ofessor Niels Birbaumer from the University of Tübingen in Germany will b
roach this subject in his upcoming seminar presenting results on brain lea
rning in patients with ‘locked-in’ syndrome. These patients can be tot
ally paralysed while being fully awake and aware. Birbaumer uses Brain and
Computer Interfaces (BCI’s)\, direct communication devices between the
brain and computer that aim to interpret patients’ brain activity.
