DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nOptogenetics employs light-sensitive proteins\, call
ed opsins\, expressed in neuronal membranes to facilitate optical excitati
on or inhibition of neurons. Our laboratory is investigating applications
of optogenetics in the peripheral nervous system using transgenic and vira
l approaches for delivery of opsins to targeted peripheral neurons. I will
describe both optical excitation and inhibition of motoneurons measured i
n muscle force and electromyographic activity as well as our methods for c
ontrolling motoneuron activity in awake and freely moving rodents. These a
pproaches can be broadly applied to study neuromuscular control and provid
e therapeutic insights into disorders of the peripheral nervous system.
