DESCRIPTION:Prof. Leonid Libkin\, University of Edinburgh\nAbstract : In t
he (very) old days\, the world of databases was a big mess\, dominated by
the network (graph) and the hierarchical (tree) data models. Then Codd cam
e\, and the nice and clean relational model replaced all others. In additi
on to providing a steady employment to many logicians\, it created a $20bi
llion/year business. We didn't live in that paradise for too long though:
less than 30 years later\, the world came back to the hierarchical model (
XML).\nAnd graph-structured data hasn't been dormant all those years\, alt
hough it was much less visible than the relational and XML models. Alberto
Mendelzon was the first to revisit the graph model back in the 80s\, and
we have seen more activity lately\, due to applications in areas such as R
DF\, biological databases\, and social networks.\nIn this talk I shall giv
e a few examples showing the importance of graph querying\, demonstrate de
sirable features of graph query languages\, and show which problems are ea
sy for graph querying\, and which problems suddenly become very hard.\nBio
: Leonid Libkin is Professor of Foundations of Data Management in the Sch
ool of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh. He was previously a Pro
fessor at the University of Toronto and a member of research staff at Bell
Laboratories in Murray Hill. He received his PhD from the University of P
ennsylvania in 1994. His main research interests are in the areas of data
management and applications of logic in computer science. He has written f
our books and over 150 technical papers. He was the recipient of a Marie C
urie Chair Award from the EU in 2006\, a Premier's Research Excellence \nA
ward in 2001\, and won four best paper awards. He has chaired program comm
ittees of major database conferences (ACM PODS\, ICDT) and was the confere
nce chair of the 2010 Federated Logic Conference. He has given a dozen inv
ited conference talks and has served on multiple program committees and ed
 itorial boards.
