DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jian QIU\nInstitute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology\
 , University of Freiburg\, Germany\nMitochondrial β-barrel membrane prote
ins transport biological material across the mitochondrial outer membrane.
However\, it is unknown where the β-barrel conformation is obtained. I m
onitored β-barrel formation by cysteine specific crosslinking and demonst
rated that the β-barrel was formed at the sorting and assembly machinery
(SAM complex). Subsequently\, it was found that the central import recepto
r Tom22 of the translocase of the outer membrane (TOM complex) interacted
with the SAM complex via the cytosolic receptor domain and stimulated the
β-barrel formation. These results support a new model of β-barrel biogen
esis\, where Tom22 mediates the TOM-SAM interaction to promote the β-barr
el formation at the SAM complex.
