 vast majority of bridges are relatively simple structures. This is most tr
 ue for girder bridges whose span range has increased significantly to cove
 r nowadays a vast proportion of bridges being built. De-spite their simpli
 city  however  bridges still pose challenging problems  due to their dimen
 sions and plan-extended character. Construction phases often dominate the 
 superstructure design. From the seismic analysis point of view their simpl
 icity is not associated with an equally simple and regular dynamic respons
 e. This pa-per presents an overview of recent research on the seismic desi
 gn and assessment/retrofit of bridges  focusing on some of the aspects whi
 ch are still not adequately covered in the codes  such as: the level of pr
 otection to be used when designing a new bridge\; the level of protection 
 to be provided when upgrading an existing bridge  and in particular whethe
 r this should be differentiated with respect to that adopted for design\; 
 the appropriate methods of modeling and analysis  with emphasis on the sco
 pe of nonlinear static methods and to the problems related to the selectio
 n of the input for response history analysis\; soil-foundation-structure i
 nteraction (piers  abutments  integral bridges) and non-uniform support in
 put  representing two controversial issues that may be mature for an inclu
 -sion in routine bridge analysis.\n\nSHORT BIO\nDr. Franchin is an Assista
 nt Professor in Structural Design at the Department of Structural Engineer
 ing and Geotechnics of Sapienza  University of Rome. He graduated with hon
 ors in Civil Engineering from Sapienza University of Rome in 1997  receive
 d a MSc in Structural Engineering from University of California  Berkeley 
 in 1999  and a doctoral degree from Sapienza in 2001. \nHis research is in
  the fields of Earthquake Engineering and Structural Reliability  where he
  has more than 50 publications  including a textbook  on topics such as th
 e seismic design and assessment/retrofit of bridges  critical facilities s
 uch as hospitals  and infrastructural systems. He is a member of Commissio
 n 7 "Seismic design"  and of Task Groups 7.5 "High-performance materials a
 nd structural systems" and 7.7 "Performance-based Seismic Design"  of the 
 International Federation of Structural Concrete (fib). He is also a member
  of Sub-Committee 3 "Structural Reliability and Optimization" of the Inter
 national Association of Structural Safety and Reliability (IASSAR).
