DESCRIPTION:Mohit Jain\, IBM\nBio: Mohit Jain is the HCI (Human Computer I
nteraction) guy at the Smarter Energy group at IBM Research India. He grad
uated with a Masters in Computer Science from the University of Toronto. H
is research interest includes designing interactive systems\, developing i
nteraction techniques\, and conducting usability evaluations in the field
of Sustainability\, Education and HCI4D (HCI for Development). Previously\
, he has worked at Microsoft Research\, HP Labs\, and Amazon\, and has pub
lished at important venues including CHI\, UbiComp and IUI.\nGlobal consum
ption of energy\, water and fuel has been increasing rapidly. The supply c
annot always be increased fast enough to meet demand\, and some resources
such as fuels are non-renewable. An alternative solution is to decrease de
mand\, which requires persuading consumers to change their consumption beh
aviour. In this talk\, I will discuss two of my on-going research projects
\, Wattalyst and YouGrid. In Wattalyst\, we designed and developed Energy
Efficiency Persuasive Interfaces for residential consumers\, to be deploye
d in Chennai and Sweden. The interface provides appliance level consumptio
n visualization\, social comparative analysis\, and incentives driven DR (
Demand Response) signals to reduce electricity demand. For YouGrid\, we de
signed and developed a collaborative interactive scheduler allowing commun
ity users to schedule their appliance usage in advance\, resulting in impr
oved fuel conversion efficiency of the diesel generators through optimal l
oading. Moreover\, the interface provides different visualization to under
stand consumption of diesel generator\, and other primary and secondary lo
 ads.
