DESCRIPTION:Paulo Blikstein\, Assistant Professor of Education and (by cou
rtesy) Computer Sciences\, Stanford University\nThere is a renaissance in
the field of educational technologies. MOOCs\, video-based learning\, and
mobile apps have captured the hearts and minds of policy makers and educat
ors. Unfortunately\, much of these new technologies are ignoring one of th
e most well-researched topics in education: the need for tangibility\, dis
covery\, inquiry\, and “making.” At the Transformative Learning Techno
logies Lab\, we are creating many new technologies to promote hands-on lea
rning both on small and large scales. In this talk\, I will present empiri
cal results from our research\, demonstrating the need for hands-on\, disc
overy-based learning\, and a series of new technological designs: “Light
Up\,” an electronics toolkit with circuit simulation and augmented reali
ty\; “Cloud Experimentation\,” which is a technology for hands-on expe
riments for MOOCs\; “HapKit\,” a low-cost haptics kit for large scale
courses\, and the “PiTopping\,” a new robotics system based on the Ras
 pberry Pi platform.
