DESCRIPTION:Dr. Nicolai Gayle Nygaard\nNotwithstanding 20 years of offshor
e wind farming many aspects of wakes remain unresolved. Since wakes accoun
t for the single largest source of losses in an offshore wind farm\, it is
critical to accurately account for their influence on production. This be
comes ever more prescient as wind farms increase in size and are clustered
closely together. At DONG Energy we are constructing an empirical wake mo
del to be used in resource assessment. Our model is based on a more than 1
0 years of data from a range of DONG Energy’s operational offshore wind
farms. This allows us to identify the universal wake characteristics. In t
he presentation I will show validation results\, where the model is compar
ed with data from a set of wind farm\, which were not included in the mode
l development. I will also highlight some of the challenges facing the ind
ustry as wind farms increase in size.
