 o construct a neutral tannakian category of smooth motives over $S$. Its t
 annakian fundamental group (with respect to a base point) is the motivic f
 undamental group of $S$. There is a homotopy exact sequence whose profinit
 e completion is\, conjecturally\, the homotopy exact sequence for \\'etale
  fundamental groups. I will then show how the existence of a direct image 
 functor for Nori's motives can be used in order to compare the relative fu
 ndamental group with the topological fundamental group.
