DESCRIPTION:Prof Wolfgang Nejdl\, Executive director L3S Research Center\,
Institute for Distributed Systems\, Leibniz Universität Hannover\nThe We
b stands for a huge and diverse infrastructure with an incredible amount o
f data. But what sets it apart from other infrastructures are its users: b
illions of users with very diverse backgrounds and goals who are shaping t
he Web.  Humans introduce diversity into the Web\, and work together crea
ting amazing amounts of information\, annotations and data sets.  These d
ifferent aspects of diversity create problems for our algorithms but also
opportunities for coping with them\, and Prof Nejedl will illustrate this
using some examples.\nHe will further discuss current and future work at L
3S related to Web Archives\, building on projects currently running at L3S
\, including a new ERC Advanced Grant\, ALEXANDRIA. Search and analysis in
Web Archives are different from their counterparts on the Web and again i
nvolving humans is a crucial ingredient in coming up with good solutions.\
nWithin ALEXANDRIA\, our goal is to significantly advance semantic and tim
e-based indexing for Web archives using human-compiled knowledge available
on the Web\, to efficiently index\, retrieve and explore information abou
t entities and events from the past. In doing so\, we will focus on the co
ncurrent evolution of this knowledge and the Web content to be indexed\, a
nd take into account diversity and incompleteness of this knowledge. We wi
ll further investigate mixed\ncrowd- and machine-based Web analytics to su
pport longrunning and collaborative retrieval and analysis processes on We
b archives. Usage of implicit human feedback will be essential to provide
better indexing through insights during the analysis process and to better
  focus harvesting of content.
