DESCRIPTION:Prof. Jeffery Tallon\, MacDiarmid Institute\, New Zealand\nThi
s talk summarises the overall behavior of the critical current density\, J
c\, of practical YBCO conductors as it evolves across the phase diagram wi
th doping and temperature. The variation is shown to be rooted in the ther
modynamic properties. A universal behavior is found in which Jc varies onl
y with the ratio of the superfluid density to the coherence length\, a gro
und state property. But it also scales with several normal-state propertie
s and it is most surprising that this should be so. These results are link
ed to the electron pairing mechanism and indicate certain lines of materia
l design in order to further improve their properties.
