DESCRIPTION:Dr Gabriele Moser\, IPRS (Image Processing and Pattern Recogni
tion for Remote Sensing)\, Università di Genoa\, IT\nAbstract:\nIn the ap
plication to monitoring flood risks and to damage assessment after flood e
vents\, effectively exploiting the information offered by current satellit
e missions for Earth observation requires both accurate image analysis met
hods\, to extract the necessary thematic information\, and the capability
to interpret this information through physically based models of the obser
ved processes. To achieve this joint goal\, a multidisciplinary approach\,
which integrates remote sensing image analysis and geophysical sciences\,
such as\, in the case of flood risks\, hydrometeorology\, is necessary. T
his seminar will address the key issues involved in the exploitation of sa
tellite data in the application to flood risk. The challenges and the meth
odological approaches involved in the multidisciplinary combination of ima
ge analysis and hydrometeorology will be discussed with the purpose of gui
ding and optimizing the process of information extraction from satellite d
ata according to the requirements of civil protection from floods. Special
attention will be devoted to the phases of emergency and post-disaster da
mage assessment\, and to the roles of supervised classification and unsupe
rvised change detection methods for thematic information mapping from remo
te sensing images. Examples of experimental results associated with recent
events and relevant case studies will be discussed.
