DESCRIPTION:Michael F. Doherty\nThe impact of particle shape on end-use fu
nctionality and downstream processing has driven industrial and academic r
esearch to control and manipulate the shapes obtained by crystallization.
Strategies for controlling crystal shape have focused primarily on chem
ical routes via the use of different solvents or solvent mixtures\, or by
the use of habit modifiers.  We have developed an engineering methodology
for manipulating crystal shape based on cycles of dissolution and growth.
Within this approach we have established simple rules for identifying t
he totality of attainable shapes (i.e.\, the attainable region) based only
on the relative growth rates of the crystal faces and the duration of the
  dissolution and growth cycles.
