DESCRIPTION:Prof. Fabien Sorin\, Laboratory of Photonic Materials and Fibr
 e Devices\, EPFL\nBio: [click]\nImparting unconventional\, large area or f
lexible substrates with complex photonic functionalities using simple and
scalable fabrication approaches remains a significant challenge in materia
ls science and engineering. However\, the search for innovative solutions
in terms of materials processing and device architecture can lead to impor
tant contributions in fundamental science\, as well as to novel technologi
cal solutions in a variety of fields such as distributed sensing and monit
oring\, energy harvesting\, saving and storage\, advanced health care syst
ems\, or functional fabrics. In this talk\, I will present the research ef
forts at the Laboratory of Photonic Materials and Fibre Devices to develop
innovative fabrication approaches for the development of micro and nanost
ructured photonic devices that can be deployed over large surfaces or with
in flexible one dimensional substrates. In particular\, I will introduce t
he emerging field of multimaterial fibres and  discuss their fabrication
approaches\, as well as potential functionalities\, applications\, and fut
 ure developments.
