 e Universität Dresden\nThe present contribution reports some highlights o
 f the research on bismuth-rich compounds performed at the Inorganic Chemis
 try Department of TU Dresden with a special focus on Bi14Rh3I9 [1\,2] and 
 Bi2TeI [3] that have been recognized in our group (in cooperation with the
  Leibniz Institute IFW Dresden) as 3D weak topological insulators.\nOur sp
 ecial interest to bismuth is propelled by its abilities to act as an elect
 ron donor as well as an acceptor and to demonstrate a fine interplay of el
 ectron localization vs. delocalization in contact with electron acceptors 
 of various strength. This underlines abundant crystal chemistry of bismuth
 \, e. g. in so called metal–insulator hybrids that can be synthesized by
  partial oxidation of bismuth intermetallic compounds with halogens (Cl\, 
 Br\, I). The resultant strongly anisotropic compounds can be insulating al
 ong selected crystallographic directions with spin-orbit coupling on bismu
 th affecting the states around the band gap.\nWe apply a broad spectrum of
  synthetic techniques ranging from conventional high-temperature annealing
  and chemical-transport reactions to novel ionic-liquid-based synthesis at
  room temperatures. For the exhaustive characterization of our samples X-r
 ay powder and single-crystal diffractometry complemented with electron mic
 roscopy investigations (ED\, HRTEM\, STEM)\, elemental composition analysi
 s (EDX\, WDX) and thermodynamical stability studies are conducted.\nRefere
