DESCRIPTION:Dr. Paul THOMAS\, Director for CODAC\, Heating and Diagnostics
\, ITER\nThe challenges of heating and diagnosing ITER fall into two group
s: (i) The environmental issues associated with neutron irradiation\, trit
ium confinement and remote handling\; and (ii) The technical challenges as
sociated with the individual systems. In the case of the heating systems t
hese include extending pulse durations to the order of one hour\, RAMI req
uirements and the extension of negative ion neutral beam injection to 1MV.
For diagnostics\, the environment makes access difficult\, first mirrors
suffer from both erosion and deposition and machine control places stringe
nt requirements that have required specific R&D. These challenges and thei
 r solutions will be described.
