DESCRIPTION:Prof. I. Hutchinson\, MIT\, Boston\, USA\nUnderstanding the in
teraction of a flowing plasma with an absorbing object is a basic plasma t
opic of long-standing intrinsic interest\; but also has important applicat
ion to electric probes\, dust-plasma dynamics\, and the interaction of sat
ellites with space plasmas. It has now become possible to solve the unavoi
 dably multi-dimensional\, particle-kinetic\, non-linear problem computatio
nally. Some examples of the new discoveries that have been made with speci
ally-built Particle In Cell codes will be discussed. These include the und
erstanding and calibration of Mach probes in tokamak edge plasmas\, and th
e effects of plasma collisionality and ion distribution function on the wa
ke and ion drag force of dust particles.
