DESCRIPTION:Prof. Dachao Li (Tianjin)\nEPFL/IMT - Peking University worksh
op on MEMS and related technologies\nIn diabetes care\, continuous glucose
monitoring of interstitial fluid (ISF) in subcutaneous tissue allows time
ly detection and correction of abnormal blood glucose excursions. This can
be effectively achieved by measuring glucose concentrations in transderma
lly extracted ISF samples. Recently\, MEMS technology has been used to pro
duce miniaturized devices for transdermal ISF extraction and glucose sensi
ng\, but there is a lack of on-chip ISF volume measurement capabilities\,
which are required to compensate for skin permeability variations over tim
 e. The enzymatic electrochemical sensor has been commonly realized for glu
cose monitoring\, in which electroactive chemical generation and hydrogen
peroxide production may cause erosion of the sensor electrodes and deactiv
ation of the functional enzymes. Also\, integration of transdermal ISF ext
raction and glucose sensing within a single MEMS device has yet to be real
ized. Here we address these limitations by integrating ISF transdermal ext
raction\, ISF volume measurement\, and optical or dielectric glucose sensi
ng in a single lab-on-a-chip system. The single-chip device can potentiall
y enable automated\, accurate\, and continuous monitoring of subcutaneous
ISF glucose concentrations.Biography:\nDr. Dachao Li received his Ph.D. de
gree majoring in Precision Instrument and Mechanics at Tianjin University
in China in 2004. Then he conducted postdoctoral research at Peking Univer
sity in China and Case Western Reserve University in USA respectively from
2004 to 2008. Presently\, he is an associate professor at the College of
Precision Instrument and Optoelectronics Engineering in Tianjin University
. His research interests include micro sensors and biomedical micro system
 s.
