DESCRIPTION:Professor Payman Jula\, Simon Fraser University (SFU)\, Vancou
ver\, Canada\nBio: Payman Jula is an Associate Professor at Beedie School
 of Business\, Simon Fraser University (SFU)\, Vancouver\, Canada\, where h
e teaches courses related to operations management\, and decision making u
nder uncertainty. Payman has a PhD in Industrial Engineering and Operation
s Research from University of California at Berkeley. His research interes
ts are in transportation and logistics\, and applications of operations ma
nagement in the manufacturing and service (particularly healthcare deliver
 y) industries. Payman has studied the economics of Asia - North America su
pply chains. He has worked with many international high tech companies\, i
ncluding Samsung Semiconductor\, Cypress Semiconductor\, Micron Technology
\, and IMFlash Technologies on issues related to cycle time reduction\,
 production planning\, scheduling\, and supply chain management.\nAbstract:
In Manufacturing:Motivated by scheduling challenges in semiconductor manu
facturing\, I propose a framework to oversee and integrate local decentral
ized scheduling algorithms utilized in complex supply chain manufacturing.
This approach  fill the gap between higher–level production planning a
nd lower-level scheduling by establishing short-term production targets an
d priority scores for each product at each step in the system. Examples of
schedulers within this framework will be provided.\nIn Transportation: An
alytical models are introduced for predicting the allocation to ports and
transportation channels of containerized goods imported from Asia to North
America. These models are calibrated on industrial data. The results are
analyzed\, and are used to describe the mix of supply-chain strategies uti
lized by various types of importers and the consequent trends in import fl
ows by port and landside channel. Policy recommendations for governments\,
transportation and logistics service providers\, and importers are also p
rovided. (Joint work with Rob Leachman at U.C. Berkeley)\nIn Healthcare: A
nalytical models are introduced to address challenges of scheduling patien
ts with stochastic service times and heterogeneous service sequences in a
multi-stage outpatient facility\, while considering bi-objectives of minim
izing the waiting time of patients and the overtime of the facility. (Time
  permitting)
