DESCRIPTION:Maria Schillaci\, National Institute of Nuclear Physics INFN\,
Laboratori Nazionali del Sud LNS\, Catania\, Italy\nWithin European Parti
tioning & Transmutation research programs\, it becomes very important havi
ng the opportunity to use infrastructures specifically dedicated to the st
udy of fundamental reactor physics of future fast neutron-based reactors.
In this contest an Accelerator Driven System low power prototype\, calls I
SR Intrinsically Safe Reactor\, was recently proposed and designed by the
INFN Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare\, in collaboration with Ansaldo
Nucleare (Italy).\nThe ADS are systems that guarantee the production of n
uclear energy thanks to the use of a fast subcritical core where fissions
are maintained in a steady-state by supplying neutrons from an external so
urce. The INFN proposal considers as external neutron source the 70 MeV\,
0.75 mA proton cyclotron facility\, already foreseen for the INFN SPES pro
ject at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (LNL)\, Italy\, and a Beryllium ta
rget as proton to neutron converter.\nDuring the seminar I will discuss ab
out my contributions to different topics related the project mentioned abo
ve\, carried on during the two years fellowship spent at Laboratori Nazion
ali del Sud LNS of Catania. First of all\, I will present the preliminary
beam line design used to transport the 70 MeV proton beam\, delivered by t
he SPES cyclotron\, to the Be target\, together with a description of the
low power ISR facility. Optics design and magnetic elements arrangements\,
evaluated according to LNL building project\, will be also discussed.\nMo
reover\, I will describe my contribution to experimental tests conducted a
t LNS\, devoted to the measurement of the neutron production yield from th
e Beryllium target. Due to the scarce amount of data in the energy region
of interest\, a dedicated and detailed yield measurement was performed at
LNS\, covering a large angular (from 0° to 150°) and energy range (from
thermal up to beam energy). A description of the experimental technique ad
opted and the data results will be presented.\nMy contribution to the draf
ting of papers and my participations to international schools and conferen
 ces will be also mentioned.
