DESCRIPTION:Dr. Catherine Klapperich\, Director of the Laboratory for Diag
nostics and Global Healthcare Technologies\, Boston University\nIn the fra
mework of the EssentialTech Program\, CODEV  welcomes Dr. Klapperich\, wh
o will discuss how the field of molecular diagnostics can improve global h
ealthcare in developing countries.\nHer laboratory focuses on the design a
nd engineering of manufacturable\, disposable systems for use in low-resou
rce settings at the point-of-care.\nInnovative solutions have\, for exampl
e been proposed to perform microfluidic sample preparation for bacterial a
nd viral targets from several human body fluids.  These technologies incl
ude nucleic acid extraction\, protein extraction\, microorganism enrichmen
 t and/or concentration and small-scale dialysis.\nDr. Klapperich's lab is
currently working on devices for the detection and quantification of HIV\,
  hemorrhagic fevers\, infectious diarrheas\, influenza\, MRSA and cancer b
iomarkers. Current projects include detection by PCR\, isothermal amplific
ation\, and novel optical techniques. The approach considers assay develop
ment\, device design\, sample flow\, storage and transport all opportuniti
es to drive down the cost and increase the accessibility of molecular test
 s in the developing world.
