 sity of Toronto\nHe is also head of the Rehabiltiation Engineering Laborat
 ory\, University Health Network\, Canada.\nIn this lecture three neuropros
 thetic applications will be presented that do not belong to a typical “g
 arden variety” neuroprostheses that one can commonly find discussed in t
 he literature.  The first part of the lecture will showcase a neuroprosth
 etic application which is aimed at restoring voluntary hand function after
  severe stroke.  In the lecture the results of a Phase II randomized cont
 rol trial will be presented\, which were pivotal for this technology to be
 come a commercially viable product.  The second part of the lecture will 
 discuss a neuroprosthetic system for blood pressure regulation for individ
 uals who suffer from orthostatic hypotension following spinal cord injury.
   In the lecture the results from a Phase I clinical trial will be presen
 ted.  The third part of the lecture will showcase use of electrical stimu
 lation technology as means to navigate stem cell migration.  In the lectu
 re the proof of principle results will be presented.  These three project
  have been selected to showcase idea generation\, product development and 
 clinical trial validation process commonly practiced at the Rehabilitation
  Engineering Laboratory.  The second objective of this lecture is to stre
 ss the importance of system level engineering\, as a critical tool in the 
 process of creation\, development and validation of neuroprosthetic device
 s.
