DESCRIPTION:Dr. Paul THOMAS\, Director for CHD Directorate\, Directorate f
 or CODAC\, Heating and Diagnostics\, ITER\nThe challenges of heating and d
 iagnosing ITER fall into two groups: (i) The\nenvironmental issues associa
 ted with neutron irradiation\, tritium\nconfinement and remote handling\;
 and (ii) The technical challenges\nassociated with the individual systems.
   In the case of the heating systems\nthese include extending pulse durat
 ions to the order of one hour\, RAMI\nrequirements and the extension of ne
 gative ion neutral beam injection to\n1MV.  For diagnostics\, the environ
 ment makes access difficult\, first mirrors\nsuffer from both erosion and
 deposition and machine control places stringent\nrequirements that have re
 quired specific R&D.  These challenges and their\nsolutions will be descr
 ibed.
