DESCRIPTION:Prof. Francesco Stellacci\nMost surfaces of folded proteins an
d hence of any proteic complex present a fine coexistence of hydrophobic a
nd hydrophilic domains at a length scale that is commensurate with the siz
e of a few small molecules. In this talk I will illustrate my personal end
eavor in producing materials whose surface presents a coexistence of hydro
phobic and hydrophilic groups at the same length scale and in using these
materials to understand what fundamental properties this coexistence provi
des the assembly. In particular I will present nanoparticles that behave a
s cell penetring peptides and have a driving force towards the spontaneous
fusion with lipid bilayers in general and cell membrane specifically.
