DESCRIPTION:Dr. Orestis Malaspinas\, University of Geneva\nBio: Dr. Oresti
s Malaspinas is a senior researcher in the fields of Lattice Bolzmann non-
Newtonian fluids and turbulence modeling. He contributed to the Palabos so
ftware by developping advanced turbulence and turbulent boundary layer mod
els.\nOne of the four founding members of the company\, he conducts his re
search activities at the University of Geneva and Université Pierre et Ma
rie Curie (Paris) where he maintains and encourages academic contributions
to the numerical models implemented in Palabos.\nCancelled - the speaker
is unwell.\nThe lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has established itself as a
n alternative computational fluid dynamics solver since its creation in th
e late 80's. Historically\, this numerical scheme was derived from the FHP
(Frisch\, Hasslacher and Pommeau) cellular automaton. In 2006\, it was sh
own that following a rigorous procedure for the discretization of the cont
inuous Boltzmann equation\, one recovered the empirically derived LBM sche
me. This important result gave a more solid theoretical basis to the metho
d and allowed many more rigorous derivations of numerical models.\nIn this
talk I will present recent theoretical and numerical advances in large Ed
dy simulation (LES) techniques using the LBM. Then I will also discuss the
modeling of turbulent boundary layers and their coupling with LES. Finall
y I will show some other recent applications which will be selected among
blood flow modeling and noise source identification.
