DESCRIPTION:Prof. Pascal Meier\nThe association of inflammation with cance
 r remains an unsolved mystery of current biology and medicine. While infla
 mmation is a protective response to noxious stimuli\, smouldering inflamma
 tion in the tumour microenvironment can support tumour growth\, subvert ad
 aptive immunity\, and response to therapy. Recent evidence indicate that a
  complex relationship exists between components of the cell death pathways
  and inflammation. Inhibitor of APoptosis (IAP) proteins represent key reg
 ulators of both cell death and inflammatory signalling. IAPs are implicate
 d in cancer due to their ability to inhibit cell death but also because th
 ey mediate activation of NFκB and MAPK pathways that\, in turn\, drive ex
 pression of genes important for cell survival\, inflammation\, immunity an
 d cell migration. Here\, I will review the Ubiquitin-dependent functions a
 ssigned to those IAP proteins that act at the intersection of cell death r
 egulation and inflammatory signaling\, and discuss some unexpected non-apo
 ptotic roles of components of the cell death machinery.
